STUDENTS QUESTIONS: GENDER IN WORDS

STUDENTS HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT ART ( EL ARTE)  AND THE ARTS (LAS ARTES)

In Spanish we have few words that belong to both genders. 

“Art” (arte)  belongs to this group. Because this peculiarity, most students who want to improve their Spanish as a Second Language, get confused with the gender. They don´t know if the Word “Art” is female or masculine.  

We have to make clear that the Word “art” is in grammar an ambiguous noun, because it can be used either as a he as a she. 

When the Word Art is singular, it is a masculine Word. If it has the pronoun “Las”, it is feminine and it is plural.   

Besides this effect, gender change may be a current belief of Euphonia (an acustical effect). 

 

“Art” begins with a Keynote A, so “La Arte” implies Euphonia. For this, we tend to think this is the reason the masculine specific article is singular. But we’ve already noticed that a demonstrative feminine article is also used: “Las Artes Plásticas” (Plastic Arts).

In conclusion, we can say that this noun is masculine in its singular form (Scenic Art “El Arte Escénico), and feminine when plural. We also notice that most of the time it is singular and masculine. Its feminine when used with few adjectives, as in: Plastic Arts or Scenic Arts, and so on.  

About “El Arte” or “Las Artes” meaning, in its singular form, ART ( el arte)  is abstract and ARTS ( las artes)  relate to some artistic disciplines.

EL ARTE O LA ARTE: EL USO CORRECTO Y LA RAZÓN

DUDAS DE LOS ESTUDIANTES

En el idioma español son poco comunes las palabras  que pertenecen al masculino

y al femenino al mismo tiempo. 

El término “arte” hace parte de éste grupo. Debido a tal particularidad, la mayoría de veces los estudiantes que están en pro de perfeccionar su español como segunda lengua, tienden a confundirse.  No saber en qué momento utilizar “Arte” como palabra masculina y cuando como femenina.

Con respecto a esta situación se debe aclarar que el término “arte” corresponde a lo que en gramática  es un sustantivo con carácter ambiguo, debido al hecho de la utilización de su género. 

Si nos fijamos, cuando éste está en singular lleva el género masculino “EL ARTE”, pero cambia en plural  a femenino “LAS ARTES”.

Fuera de tal aspecto, se pudiese creer que el cambio de género del sustantivo se debe a un problema de eufonía (Efecto acústico).

Como se puede observar la palabra “ Arte” inicia con una A tónica, por lo que “La arte” sugiere una situación de Eufonía.  Por lo anterior, se tendería a pensar, que es este el motivo por el cual se utiliza el artículo  definido masculino en singular. Pero no es el caso ya que, si notamos “ Arte” también se usa en el  femenino plural.  “ Las artes plásticas”.

Conforme a tal situación, se puede decir que  el sustantivo llega a ser  singular en masculino ("el arte escénico") y  plural en femenino. Por lo tanto, se puede determinar que la mayoría de veces que encontramos el término en singular, suele ser masculino.  Por otro lado, el sustantivo en femenino se  presenta al ser utilizado con ciertos adjetivos  por ejemplo: artes plásticas, artes escénicas etc.

En relación al significado entre “El arte” o “ las artes” difiere en el sentido que “ARTE” de forma singular, provee un concepto abstracto mientras que  “ARTES”   de manera plural, se refiere a diversas disciplinas artísticas.
